Game frequency among New Zealand players

32 percent of the participants indicated that they play at least once a quarter, and of these, 16 percent indicated that they play weekly. Almost 60 percent stated that they never or very rarely play for money online.

The report shows that men play more often than women. 42% of men said they play at least once a quarter, while only 22% of women said they play at the same frequency.

Gaming frequency among New Zealandr has increased

From the interviews it could be seen that the gaming frequency among the New Zealanders has increased since March 2020. A whopping 19 percent of those who play at least once a quarter report that they have increased their frequency of play during this period compared to before.

Lottery and number games are most common

In the interviews, those who indicated that they play at least once a quarter were asked what games they usually play. Lotto online and number games were by far the most common.

When the interviewees were asked whether they had overall gone plus or minus on their gambling in the past three months, a clear majority indicated that they had gone minus. The only difference was those who played on poker, with the majority stating that they had neither won nor lost. There was also the same percentage that indicated that they had gone plus as the percentage that had gone minus on their poker playing.

About 70 percent of those who played lotteries and number games as well as on trot stated that they had lost on their gambling in the last three months. Even for casino, bingo and other betting, the majority had gone with a loss.

Games on sites without a New Zealand gaming license

Of those who stated that they had played in the last three months, 7 percent stated that they had played on a gaming site without a New Zealand gaming license and 12 percent stated that they did not know whether the site had a New Zealand gaming license or not. But the absolute majority have chosen to play only on New Zealand licensed sites. Something that the gaming Inspectorate considers very positive.

It is also not entirely obvious that these 7 percent have actually played on a site without a New Zealand gaming license. Those who indicated that they have played on gaming sites that do not have a New Zealand gaming license were asked where they have found these gaming sites. This is how the answers sounded:

• 47% had found the pages after active internet search
• 31% received tips from other players
• 31% saw advertisements for these gambling sites
• 7% had received direct advertising
• 4 % found information on websites that suggest casinos without a New Zealand license

Gambling sites that do not have a New Zealand gaming license may not market themselves in New Zealand or against New Zealand players.
